On Jan 1. 2010, what has been touted as the world's biggest trading area was inaugurated. The China ASEAN Free Trade Agreement mandates that tariffs be eventually reduced to zero for all commodities. CAFTA has elicited different responses from Southeast Asia, from optimism that it could lead to more prosperity to fears of Southeast Asia's agriculture and industry being wiped out.

Dr. Walden Bello, a member of the House of Representatives of the Republic of the Philippines, will explore the different dimensions of the emerging ASEAN-China trade and broader economic relationship. A former visiting professor at UCLA's Dept of Sociology, Bello is a noted critic of free trade and is the author of 15 books on global and Asian economic and political issues, the latest of which is Food Wars (London: Verso, 2009).
