About the Speaker, Ravi Kuchimanchi
The inspiration for the movie "SWADES" & founder of “AID”
Ravi founded the Association for India's Development (AID) in 1991 while getting his PhD in Physics at the University of Maryland. He returned to India in January 1998 to work full-time on involved with various aspects of sustainability, such as interacting with Narmada Bachao Andolan (a people's movement by Medha Patkar against the controversial Sardar Sarovar Dam), initiating local community development efforts in villages near Rajamundri, Srikakulam, etc., and developing self-sufficient technologies at the local level. Among his innovative ideas are the development of the pedal-power generator, which has the potential of being used in village level as an alternative source for energy and a bamboo rice cooker, made completely from cheap village resources. His work to generate microhydroelectric power for the village of Bilgaon using purely voluntary labor, in the Narmada valley inspired filmmaker Ashutosh Gowarikar's movie "Swades", a film that earned rich critical as well as popular accolades across the globe.
Ravi Kuchimanchi is married to AID Jeevansaathi Aravinda Pillalamari, and they have one daughter, Khiyali.
