Architecture is a vessel that contains human life. As the shape of a vessel varies according to its contents, architectural patterns change also. In order to understand the architecture of a particular period, it is necessary for us to examine life within that time; conversely, we are able to infer life during a certain period through architecture.
This research inquires into the relations between the Confucian ritual, which was a dominant idea during the Chosŏn dynasty, and architecture. The Confucian ritual functioned as a normative order of the architecture in the Chosŏn period, which had an influence not only on architecture for ceremonial rites including a "DAN"(壇,altar) & "MYO”(廟, confucian shrine) but also on royal palaces and house planning. This research also intends to look at the influence of Confucian ceremonies including the customary formalities of a family on space structure and plot planning and introduce the appearance of the upper class housing at Hanseong(Seoul) through the Changsŏgak-possessed “GAOKDO"(家屋圖, architectural drawings for house) during the latter period of the Chosŏn Dynasty.
