China and Taiwan: The Prospects for Cross-Straits Relations

Hung-mao Tien (PhD in Political Science, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 1969) was Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan), 2000-2002. He was also National Policy Advisor to former President Lee Teng-hu. Dr. Tien is now president of the Institute for National Policy Research (Taipei).
Since 1969 Dr. Tien has written extensively on the Republic of China and its development--for example, in The Great Transition, Social and Political Change in the Republic of China (1990). He has also edited or coedited many publications on Taiwan, the mainland, U.S.China policu, cross-strait relations, Asian regional economics,and the security environment in the Asia Pacific region.These publications include: China under Jiang Zemin (Lynne Reiner, 2000), The Security Environment in the Asia-Pacific (M.E. Sharpe, 2000), and Taiwan's Electoral Politics and Democratic Transition: Riding the Third Wave (M.E. Sharpe, 1996).
