About Orissa Dance Academy
Orissa Dance Academy is one of the premier cultural institutions of Orissa. Established in 1975 by the renowned Guru Gangadhar Pradhan, it is now run by Guru Aruna Mohanty. The Academy has made major contributions in promoting and popularizing Odissi dance and music, as well as imparting intensive training to artists in India and abroad. Combining innovation with strong training in technique and pedagogy, the Academy's aesthetic is emblematic of excellence in the field. Many preeminent dancers have graduated from the ranks of the ODA and continue to make their mark in the field today.
The Academy's milestone achievement for many years was running one of the national Konark dance festivals. It now organizes the Dhauli Festival annually to create cultural awareness among the people. Another important feature of the cultural calendar is an annual festival held in San Diego, in collaboration with the Centre for World Music. About Guru Aruna Mohanty
Dynamism, charisma, and talent makes Guru Aruna Mohanty is one of the finest Odissi artists in the field of Indian classical dance. Currently at the helm of the Bhubaneshwar-based Orissa Dance Academy, Mohanty combines an approach that cultivates the basic structure and techniques of Odissi dance while exploring unconventional approaches to dance and choreography.
Mohanty was trained and nurtured under the able guidance of Padmashree Guru Gangadhar Pradhan. She especially excels in the abhinaya (or expressive) aspect of Odissi. Beginning first as a student of the ODA, she has become a respected performer, teacher, choreographer, and administrator. She has received multiple awards and accolades for her contribution to the arts, including the Mahari Award (1997), Sanjukta Panigrahi Memorial National Award (2001), Government of India Fellowships, and the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Puraskar Award (2010).
Mohanty has travelled all over the globe to present solo and group presentations in addition to workshops and lecture demonstrations. She has also convened important seminars on choreography in the Indian dance and the allied art forms of Odisha.
Mohanty is not only an eloquent performing artist, but has investigated the history and development of Odissi as a distinct tradition. She combines extensive research and the foundational techniques and lessons from her guru with innovative thinking to produce provocative choreographies. Selected items in her repertoire include Shrusti O Pralay, Varsha-Abhinsara, Kharavela, Gatha Odishi, and Krishna Sharanam.
Mohanty is an advisor to the Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Odissi Research Centre. She serves as Vice President of the Odisha Sangeet Natak Akademi and was also a member of the Central Sangeet Natak Akademi – these are the two main arts institutes responsible for promoting dance, music, and drama in India at the regional and national levels respectively.
