The Jefferson Global Seminars (JGS) program, organized jointly by HKUST and the University of Virginia, aims to offer students a unique, multi-faceted global perspective on their coursework; opportunities to build relationships with international peers; and the chance to develop a global frame of reference that will set them apart in the future.
Students participating in JGS will:
- Develop a cross-cultural perspective on academic content
- Engage in dialogue with HKUST and UVa peers about issues that impact their collective future
- Apply their new knowledge to a global frame of reference in future responses to situations and event
This year, there will be five courses on an array of topics of global interest. Courses are 4 credits each and are taught by UVa and HKUST faculty:
- China in Western Eyes
- City and Modernity
- A New History for a New China 1700–2000, Comparative Perspectives on Inequality
- The Nexus of Power: Warfare, Trade, and the State in Chinese History
- Environmental Economics and Environmental Problems in China

Lodging is approximately HKD2000–3000 (US$258–$387) for the summer, but this fee will be refunded upon completion of the program. Students are responsible for travel expenses, books, and some personal expenditures.
Students should submit the following materials to Aaron Miller, Assistant Director, UCLA Asia Institute, by April 12, 2015. Submissions are accepted via e-mail at armiller@international.ucla.edu or in person at 11286 Bunche Hall.
- The application form (PDF link below) with only Part A (first page and top half of second page) filled out. The form requires the following information: name, country of citizenship, gender, passport number and expiration date, date and place of birth, course of study (major, etc.), special educational needs, contact information of parent/guardian, and tentative course selection.
- The required supporting documents as specified in the application form: resume, statement of interest (one page maximum describing your academic interests and goals for attending this program), transcript, copy of passport. Please note that unofficial transcripts will be accepted, and that proof of English proficiency may be required if the applicant is a non-native speaker of English.
- One faculty letter of recommendation, which may be e-mailed separately.
