Museum Resources and Teaching about Asia
Committee for Teaching about Asia symposium at the San Diego Museum of Art -- held in conjunction with the Association for Asian Studies annual meeting.
Teachers, museum educators, curriculum specialists, and the general public are invited to join the Committee for Teaching about Asia in discussing making effective instructional use of museum resources in teaching about Asia.
The program will include presentations on the San Diego Museum of Art's Asian collection, on its upcoming exhibition on art in contemporary East Asia, on the ongoing "Art of Rice" exhibition at the UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History, and other local museum offerings. In addition to a tour of the SDMA collection, new web-based resources for teachers and others will be introduced, including the U.S. Department of Education-funded effort "Outreach World."
Presenters include Maxine Gaiber, Betti-Sue Hertz , and Cornelia Feye of the San Diego Museum of Art, Roy Hamilton of the UCLA Fowler Museum of Cultural History, and Clayton Dube of the UCLA Asia Institute.
This event will take place in the board room of the San Diego Museum of Art in beautiful Balboa Park. In addition to the Museum of Art and its large Asian collection and innovative exhibits, Balboa Park hosts the Mingei International Museum specializing in folk art and the Japanese Friendship Garden. Refreshments will be provided.
Museum admission is $8, but will be waived for those who register prior to March 3. To register, send a note to firstname.lastname@example.org and provide your name and institutional affiliation. Please put "cta registration" in the subject heading.
A bus will be available to take attendees from the Town and Country Hotel main entrance to the Museum. Board the bus at 8:30 Thursday morning. A bus will be available to return attendees to the hotel at 1:15 pm.
