VIDEO: Asia in LA 2011: Musical Measures of Asia

Watch a video of the day's program

Duration: 3:59

Music offers vivid expressions of distinctive cultures that can affirm social identities at the same time as it creates fascination and wonder for new listeners.  Music reproduces and transforms within well-defined traditions and music moves and mixes across times and places to create new sounds and sensibilities.  Asian music of many kinds is part of the Los Angeles cultural scene and the study and performance of music at UCLA engages Asia both in our city and overseas.

The Asia Institute's third "Asia in LA" program, Musical Measures of Asia, took place on May 21, 2011. The day featured presentations of new research by UCLA graduate students; roundtable discussions of classical traditions and popular forms; and musical demonstrations by UCLA performers.
