As part of his ongoing MAKE ART/STOP AIDS initiative, WAC associate professor and co-chair David Gere invites members of the campus community to look in on the eponymous undergraduate class he is offering this quarter. With the magisterial Keiskamma Altarpiece as backdrop, more than 40 undergrads are working in groups to devise arts-based HIV interventions. Gere will outline the philosophy of the class while students share projects they have planned for South Africa, Senegal, India, Peru, Brazil, and South Central Los Angeles.

MAKE ART/STOP AIDS, launched with a Global Impact Research Grant from the UCLA International Institute, is a network of artists committed to intervening in the AIDS epidemic. It is also an international touring exhibition, set to open at the UCLA Fowler Museum in February 2008; a group of pilot projects primarily in India; and a UCLA class for undergraduates, funded in part by the Office of Instructional Development. David Gere directs the project, as well as the new Art | Global Health Center at UCLA.
