Robert Blunt will present a paper examining Kenyan anxiety about Satanism in the 1990's when structural adjustment conditionalities transformed Kenya's patronage practices and conceptions of moral exchange. In particular, Kenya's satanism scare illuminated a heightened concern for simulation; that Satan was masking an illicit and immoral economy in everyday forms of value and proceeses of exchange. This paper explores the moral reconfiguration of patronage in confessional narratives about past participation in devil worshipping.
