UCLA International Institute 2014 Commencement

Admission to the June 14th event at Royce Hall requires a ticket (available solely through graduating students).

The UCLA International Institute congratulates its graduating students and looks forward to seeing them and their families at the 2014 commencement ceremony.

The ceremony is expected to run through approximately 8:00 pm, followed by a small reception in Royce Quad. Please note that tickets are available solely through students graduating from the UCLA International Institute's Interdepartmental Degree Programs. 
 
Commencement speaker
The UCLA International Institute is delighted to announce that Terry Kramer (UCLA 1982, economics) will be the featured speaker at the commencement ceremony. Terry and his wife Suzan are friends of the Institute, having created a Global Leadership Scholars fund here in 2011. The fund, now in its third year of operation, awards scholarships to highly motivated students to study abroad, providing them crucial international experience in their preparation as future business and nonprofit leaders (see recent article).

Following UCLA,Terry completed an MBA at Harvard University in 1986 and went on to work in the telecommunications industry for 25 years. Terry spent the majority of his career in a variety of roles at Vodafone Group Plc/AirTouch Communications. One of his last positions there was as group strategy and business improvement director, in which he focused on the transition of Vodafone's business from a voice- to a data-based model, with mobile as the "platform of the future."

Terry is currently a distinguished visitor at UCLA's Anderson School of Management, where he taught two courses on the mobile communications industry in spring 2014. He is also a faculty advisor to the Global Access Program and Strategic Management Research Program of the Anderson School, where he advises students engaged in client assignments that concern new market entry, product development and business strategy.

After leaving full-time work in the telecommunications industry, Terry spent two years (2011–13) as an entrepreneur in residence at the Harvard Business School. In June 2012, he was appointed by President Obama to serve as Ambassador, Head of U.S. Delegation, for the World Conference on International Telecommunications (held December 2012 in Dubai). In this role, he led a 100+ person delegation of U.S. government, industry and civil society representatives in negotiating a treaty on international telecommunications policy.

Terry has spent several years leading and advising small, growing technology companies, including Fiber Tower, 724 Solutions and Sonim Technologies. He currently sits on the boards of Envivio Corporation, TangoCard, the Harvard Business School California Research Center, Larkin Street Youth Services, Civic Legal Corps., and the World Affairs Council of Northern California. He is also a senior advisor to the CEO of MegaLabs, the new product/innovation arm of the Russian mobile operator MegaFon.

Royce Hall: Seating and Photography
Guests should arrive between 5:30 and 6:00 pm; there is no reserved seating. People requiring special assistance due to a disability are advised to arrive early (please click here for additional information). Guests in wheelchairs should check in with the house staff so that they can be escorted into a designated area inside of Royce Hall. 

Attendees are free to take photos, but are asked to remain in their seats. No one is permitted to stand in the aisles during the ceremony. Professional photographers will be taking individual photos of each student that will be available for purchase shortly after the ceremony.
