Buddhism and Science: A Guide for the Perplexed
A talk on Buddhism and science by Professor Donald Lopez of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Part of the UCLA Center for Buddhist Studies Numata Colloquium Series.
Monday, February 23, 2009
3:00 PM - 4:30 PM
Royce Hall 243
Los Angeles, CA 90095
In debates about the relationship between religion and science, some have argued that among the world's religions, it is Buddhism that is most compatible with modern science. In this lecture, Donald Lopez will provide a brief history of the association of Buddhism with science, beginning in the nineteenth century and moving to the present day. He will conclude the lecture by considering possible reasons for the persistence of the claims for the compatibility of Buddhism and science, as well as what Buddhism has gained, and lost, in the process.
