The UCLA Latin American Institute was established in 1959 to coordinate research, instructional, and public service programs related to Latin America. In keeping with its research mission, the Institute undertook a scholarly publishing program to make available the results of original research of the highest quality. The Institute issued its first title in 1965 and supports and complements the Institute's research function by publishing statistical and bibliographic reference works, an interdisciplinary journal, and scholarly books on Latin America.

The broad scope of the program underscores the Institute's commitment to providing access to information about Latin America, disseminating the results of research by Latin Americanist scholars worldwide; and advancing knowledge and understanding of the region and its place in the world.
