Near East FLAS Fellowships

CNES FLAS, Academic Year 2013 - 2014
(for UCLA Graduate Student, UCLA Undergraduate Student)

The U.S. Department of Education Foreign Language and Area Studies fellowship program supports training in modern foreign languages and related area studies. New and continuing undergraduate and graduate students in all disciplines may apply for academic year and summer awards. Currently approved area programs are Africa, Europe and Eurasia, East Asia, Latin America, Middle East and Southeast Asia. Currently approved languages for FLAS study, administered through the Center for Near Eastern Studies, are Arabic, Armenian, Hebrew, Persian and Turkish.
Since the purpose of the program is to enrich the nation’s pool of area and international specialists, applicants must be planning to use their training to teach, to serve in government or international agencies or to engage in other work that advances American understanding of other countries. Fellowship recipients must be engaged in full-time study for the duration of their awards and must submit reports on the courses they pursue and the progress they make. To apply for a FLAS fellowship, students must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. In addition, FLAS recipients will be expected to take a proficiency exam at the beginning and end of their award period by designated deadlines; recipients may be asked to cover the cost of one of these exams (approx. $30). All requested information should reflect your status during the fellowship period.
The fellowship requires that students take both a language and area studies courses for a letter grade during each quarter of the academic year at UCLA. The academic-year graduate awards provide a $15,000 stipend as well as in-state registration fees and tuition. The undergraduate award provides a stipend of $5,000 and a maximum of $10,000 toward tuition and fees. Undergraduates already enrolled at UCLA who will not have graduated by the start of the fellowship may also apply for both academic-year and summer awards but only for intermediate and advanced levels of language study.
These grants may be combined with supplementary funding from other funding agencies. However in cases of parallel large grants, recipients will have to decide which grant to accept and pairing will not be allowed and students must immediately notify the Center of additional funding offers. Grantees are required to inform the Center of any other awards received during the FLAS fellowship period.

Required information includes:
• A statement of purpose of 2000 characters or less outlining one’s research and language study plans and explaining how language study will enhance the project.
• Two (2) academic letters of recommendation
• One (1) language evaluation or proficiency certification
• One (1) unofficial University transcript
• Applicant's resume or CV

Summer awards provide a stipend of $2,500 plus tuition and fees up to a maximum of $5,000. FLAS funds may be used for intensive summer language study at UCLA or elsewhere. In order to qualify for funding, the summer intensive language program must last at least 6 weeks, provide the equivalent of a full academic year of instruction, and provide at least 140 contact hours for beginning and intermediate level courses, or 120 contact hours for advanced level coursework.
